This April, school librarians will add a new chapter to their story as they gather for the 3rd installment of the Annual Library Symposium. Scheduled for April 9th, the Symposium will provide a full day of professional learning crafted especially for school librarians.
The event’s organizer is Christie Boen, IMESD Library Media Specialist. Boen says the day will include sessions on book repair, maintaining collections, Destiny (library software) updates, and strategies to promote student engagement in reading. Additionally, Jen Mauer, School Library Consultant of the State Library of Oregon, will present on what it means to explore the core values inherent to school libraries.
School library staff from all 21 districts in the Intermountain Education Service District region are invited to attend the event, which will be held at the IMESD building in Pendleton, Oregon. The cost is free and lunch will be provided.
“Working in a school library is a unique and often solitary role, which is why this symposium is so vital,” Boen said. “My hope is that attendees leave not just with practical tools they can use in their libraries tomorrow, but with a renewed sense of connection to a community of peers where they can share ideas and support one another.” Boen works within the community of educators she supports to ensure that the sessions are responsive to regional needs.
Last year’s Symposium drew 35 participants from 19 districts, proving that library educators are anxious to advance the story on their professional growth. For more information about the event or registration, contact Christie Boen at christie.boen@imesd.k12.or.us
